SPRING VIEW FARM

Natural Farming – Healthy Living

Farm Philosophy

Farming at Spring View focuses on using natural materials and systems instead of chemicals, to grow healthy food and soil. Soil life is enhanced by using aerated worm casting teas, mature manure and cover crops.

Companion planting, natural predators and crop rotation are used to combat pests and diseases.

Irrigation requirements are met with gravity fed systems and solar-powered pumps.

NATURAL FARMING

Natural farming supports and encourages healthy systems.

This starts with soil health which supports crop, orchard and pasture health. Livestock health is derived from the preceding systems.
The goal of natural farming is to create interdependent systems where plant, animals and humans can flourish.

Pecan Trees

Establishing a pecan orchard is a long term project. It takes up to 8 years to reach profitable production volumes.
In the first few years, proper root development and tree shaping take priority.

Spring View Eggs

Free Range Eggs

Robust chicken breeds, Hy-line Browns and Lohman Browns are doing well on Spring View Farm. They are housed in stone-built and iron clad chicken houses where they have access to roaming outdoor grazing camps during the day. At night they are kept inside to protect them from predators.

The eggs are hand-gathered daily. No antibiotics or hormones are used for the chickens on the farm. Chicken health is promoted by providing the hens with an environment where exposure to any stress is minimised. The farm is Free Range Certified by the South African Food Safety Agency.
